Less Is More?? Huh…

One morning last week I was reading in John 15 and verse 2 jumped out at me.

“He cuts off every branch that doesn’t bear fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes so it will be even more fruitful.”

“…every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes so it will be even more fruitful…”

The fact that God trims things out of my life that don’t bear fruit isn’t a new thought to me, but somehow the fact that He trims off things that are “bearing fruit” as well hit me differently recently.

One of my friends was talking about an apple tree in her yard that was overgrown  and out of control producing a less than stellar crop of apples.  She pruned it back more than she wanted to but has seen a better harvest this year than she had before.

I listened to a podcast  that brought out the same fact; this lady was  raising pumpkins and learned that in order to raise large pumpkins, she needed to trim off many small pumpkins  to have the rest of her crop grow large, healthy pumpkins.  It was hard for her to trim off so many pumpkins that looked great, but she did it in order to reach her long-term goal, which was large pumpkins!

My take-away?

Not everything that is “good” is meant to be a part of my life.

Not even things that are bearing fruit are necessarily meant to be in my life.

What do I mean?

God has something that He wants me to be doing, but He doesn’t want me to be doing everything.

God has someone He wants me to do life with, but He knows that I can’t do life with everyone.

God has somewhere that He intends for me to put my talents to use, but He doesn’t need me to be everywhere.

“…every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes so it will be even more fruitful…”

Even branches that do bear fruit, He prunes, so that better fruit can grow.

The challenge for me is to get with my Daddy about what is in my life that is good but not the best for right now.  Am I letting Him trim things out of my life that He wants to trim, or am I trying to graft those things back in on my own strength?

Am I satisfied with bearing fruit, or do I want to bring forth more fruit?
